What to Wear to a Family Shoot on the Sunshine Coast

What should we wear to a family session?

You’ve been thinking about booking a family session but so many things are stopping you from taking the final plunge. One of the big ones, what do we wear? Do we have the right sort of clothes? Please don’t let this one stop you! I assure you, most people have things in their current wardrobes that work perfectly for family shoots. In addition to this, I have some beautiful items in my client closet for Mums, babies and some young toddler options too. The most important thing – I want you to feel comfortable. I want you to feel beautiful and comfortable in your skin and what you are wearing so it is up to you what that means. Also, a little secret – I love casual outfits for shoots. Jeans, shorts, tees – casual dresses, board shorts for the dads etc!

With a family shoot it can be ideal to have plain, more neutral clothing – earthy colours are especially beautiful and photograph well. Also, it pays to pay close attention to undergarments – bra straps showing aren’t the best and are very hard to edit out. I’ve made this mistake myself before in a family shoot of my own!

It can look great if one or two people in a group shoot have a softly patterned item and the others are more plain. Browns, mustards, yellows, dusty pinks, burnt oranges or earthy greens and blues, cream or white all look great!

It is best to avoid logo or articles of clothing with text. Sometimes it’s worth doing some Instagram stalking to get some inspo but the outfit really isn’t the most important part of your shoot. It’s about capturing the beautiful connection you have with your loved ones.

Texture in clothing looks fantastic and adds more interest. Think linen, waffled sleeves, lace etc. In the cooler weather, rug up and think chunky, textured knits and a blanket to snuggle up in too!

Movement in Mum’s/kids outfit can look beautiful; think flowing skirts, dresses or tops.

I usually like to shoot families barefoot but if you’d like to wear shoes, that’s fine too!

Natural hair and makeup is great! Longer hair looks great out or partially out. Some women like to time their shoot with a visit to the hairdresser (me!) as this is one less thing to get ready on the day.

I have some items in my client closet for babies and young toddlers and also some items for women so if you want to check it out, look on my Instagram highlights reel. You can borrow these inclusive of the shoot price. It’s a work in progress so sorry if I don’t have something that’s suitable.

Also, I’m always available for a chat or advice on what to wear. Clients often send me what they are thinking and I can give feedback or they send me a few options they are considering and I help them decide.

Don’t let wardrobe options stop you from booking a shoot. If you don’t have something in the closet at home, you can borrow from my client closet! Or, some shops I recommend that have awesome options for your shoots ranging in price include; Kmart, Target, Best and Less, Cotton On Kids, Ghanda, Jamie Kay, Seed, Lullaby Club and Myer, just to name a few.
