Mel reached out to me when her gorgeous boy, Sandy had just been born and luckily, I had some flexibility the following week so we booked them in. As a Sunshine Coast newborn photographer, I do both in home and on location newborn shoots. I travelled to their lovely home in Bli Bli here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. We chatted, Mel got herself and Sandy dressed and I chatted with her husband, Clancy about some ideas I had for the session after a quick look around at the space, light and what I thought would work well for their little boy, Archie who had recently turned 2.
We started off on the couch for some full family shots – talking to each other, playing some cute games, tickling baby’s toes and doing nose kisses. We captured some breastfeeding shots and then Dad and Archie made ‘coffees’ in the kitchen while Sandy had his own baby chino. After that, we relaxed against a wall in the lounge room and read some of Archie’s favourite books.
Mel and I retreated to her room for some nice quiet breastfeeding photos and we then did some solo shots of gorgeous baby Sandy while he was happy and content and did our best to get some sibling shots though Archie wasn’t overly keen, we captured some gorgeous little moments.
To finish our session we went outside to the garden where I captured some photos of Sandy and his Dad. We then ventured out to their pup Charlie where I got the MOST adorable photographs of him and Archie sharing a cuddle and a kiss. Shar Peis are just such cute doggos. We did some family shots, with Archie on Dad’s shoulders and finished with some action shots, kicking the ball around the yard and giving Charlie some big belly rubs.
In home newborn sessions don’t have to be stressful or perfectly posed. In fact, I think they are a whole lot more magical and a whole lot more YOU if they aren’t. My newborn shoots are definitely more on the documentary side and I don’t stress about baby being asleep and I don’t put them into any certain poses. I keep them mostly in your arms, where they belong.
Baby toes, chunky legs, dry flaking skin and that classic baby yawn are all the parts of your tiny baby that you never want to forget. I do some gentle retouching on baby acne, unless you want it untouched of course!
Tickles, upside down hanging and crazy hair while rocking gumboots made Archie have some full body smiles. The cutest! Baby Sandy was just a dream and just came along for the ride – which is how it normally goes when toddlers are involved. I love them!
